Here at Yellowstone Environmental Solutions, we have earned an enviable reputation for providing responsible and innovative disposal solutions for a range of waste streams.
With a commitment to responsible processing practices, at our state-of-the-art treatment plant in Dorset, we offer specialist waste management solutions including used oil disposal.
In this article, we will discuss the importance of opting for a sustainable and compliant waste oil recycling business.
What is the difference between recycling and recovery?
When used oil disposal is a necessary part of an industrial activity, recycling and recovery are preferable solutions.
‘Recycling’ refers to any treatment whereby a waste stream is reprocessed into an alternative product, material or substance (or an element of a substance). However, this does not include energy recovery or processing into materials that can be used as fuels. All industrial oil will eventually reach the end of its useful life but it can be collected and processed to remove contaminants.
The term ‘recovery’ refers to any process where the primary result is that at least part of the waste serves a useful purpose, thus avoiding ‘new’ materials which would have been required to fulfil the function. When oil has impurities such as water, acids, sludge and other contaminants removed, it can be used to serve a particular function in replacement of another raw material. For example, used industrial oil can be repurposed as a fuel to save resources.
Why is responsible used oil disposal so important?
Oil is one of the most regulated sectors in the UK. DEFRA classifies used mineral oil – from commercial and industrial sources – as hazardous waste and imposes specific legal requirements for its movement, recovery and disposal.
When oil has been contaminated by known physical or chemical impurities or simply by use, it must be dealt with very carefully. To that end, movement of waste oil must be accompanied by a consignment note – a copy must be kept by everyone involved in the transfer.
Further examples:
- emulsified oils can be highly polluting in water and care should be taken during their disposal.
- water contaminated with oil, such as that found in an interceptor or a bund wall, is hazardous waste. Such waste streams need to be dealt with by a specialist and accompanied by the appropriate paperwork.
As a reputable waste oil recycling business, we can process oil in an environmentally conscientious manner, in compliance with all UK laws and regulations.
